Live in the Sunshine. Swim in the Sea. Drink the Wild Air.

Melissa Courter, MS, LMFT

My journey has been a winding path, beginning in the theatre 25 years ago and continuing on today as a licensed therapist in San Jose. I have been practicing in the Bay Area for over 12 years, offering a safe space for anyone ready to tell their story.

I started out in the theatre arts. In my rigorous training on stage, I gained insight into not only myself, but the therapeutic value of the arts as a whole. Now I give back, by offering my clients drama and the arts as a vehicle for change and transformation. Drama therapy is an embodied practice that can help us tell our stories, give us catharsis, provide us with insight, self-awareness, and deeper understanding of ourselves.

Mindfulness is another key component in my approach to life and in therapy with my clients. I have been practicing mindfullness meditation for over 24 years. My personal mindfulness practice supports and uplifts my practice as a therapist. I am also trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction(MBSR), through the University of Massecusettes. Practicing mindfulness can support us in living more equanimously and intentional, through the development of our present moment awareness.

Maternal Mental Health is another focus in my practice. I am trained and currently sitting for my Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C). I have a passion for working with new mothers who are struggling through the post-pardum phase, women who are experiencing infertility or pregnancy loss, and anyone who needs to tell their story in these ways. My personal experiences in the struggles of new motherhood have inspired me to give back, helping women and new parents find their harmony and thrive in whatever ways they need.

I love my clients and feel honored to work with them. I am continuously moved by their stories of struggle, resiliency and triumph.
